- North Yorkshire has some of the best walking areas in the UK. Especially, The dales, The Pennines, The North Yorkshire Moors, The Coast, & the low lying flat areas such as The Vale of York for the less enegetic.
- In the upland areas you will find walks suitable for all grade of walkers from famillies with babies, toddlers, children up to the most adventurous and skilled walkers.
- Always be prepared for a change in the weather,. Rain, cold, snow 7 low clouds or mist can be killers.
- Have suitable, - clothes, warm, windproof & waterproofs, -strong footware or hiking boots.
- A waterproof Backpack, or water proof cover for it.
- Equipment, Compass, map with clear waterproof cover,. These can be a backup for modern electronic navigational aids., mobile phones with maps, GPS maps. Whistle, Fist Aid.
- Sun Block cream & sun hat. On higher ground the suns rays are much stronger due to the more rarified air, & there is often no shade.
Walkers & Dogs
- Always keep dogs under control and in sight & on a lead near animals.
- Remember: Dogs love chasing animals, don't let it happen.
- If a dog worries sheep by attacking or killing them or chases sheep in a way that may cause injury, suffering or financial loss to their owner, the person in charge of that dog is guilty of an offence. The penalty for this offence is a fine of up to £1,000.
- Dog poo – bag it and bin it – any public waste bin will do

- Turn North off the A658 at Huby alongfor 1.42km you will see a very sharp right (East) at the junction into Crag Lane.
- Continue on Merrybank Lane past this junction & you will seeimmediatly roughly made car parking space on the right
- Roughly at the mid point of this car park space is a stile with stone steps, a way over the farmers stone wall, & a footpath to the Crags
- Ensure you use footpaths and don't walk through farmers fields.

- 6000 acres of wild moorland, valleys, reservoirs peak and crags.
9 and a half mile walk over Marsden Moor. Start was Brun Clough Reservoir, across the Fords over to Black Moss and Swellands Reservoir. Along The Pennine Way to Wessenden Reservoir, then onto Kirklees Way along side Blakeley and Butterley Reservoir. Also includes some drone footage.

- Malham Tarn the source of the 148km River Aire
- From the Tarm water flows underground to emerge as a river. (A stream at this location)at the foot of the cliff at Malham cove
- Tarn is a Norse namefor a small mountain lake.
- An area of upland limestone country side.
- Limestone is a water permeable rock, that over 100s of years disolves the rock.
- Limestone areas are well known for caves with stalactites and a stalagmites formed by the precipitation of Calcium from the slow dripping water from the cave ceiling.
- s hang like an icicle from the cave ceiling. They normally have pointed tips.
- Stalagmites grow from the floor underneath the Stalactites. They are usually wider and more stumpy, There tips are normallr rounded or flattened.
- When stalactites and stalagmites join together they are called Cave Pillars.

Pennine Way
A 268 mile (429km) well signed trail running North / South along the backbone of England from the Peak District through the Yorkshire Dales and over Hadrian's Wall to the Cheviot Hills. A brilliant walking experience along old miners tracks, pack horse routes and drove roads. The walk reaches a maximum height of 893m (2947 ft) at Cross Fell.
A continuous walk takes the average walker at least a fortnight, the record is 2.5 days. Sections can be done over a series of weekends.

Mother Shipton's Cave & Dropping Well
The Famous dropping or petrifying well,
- Mother Shipton, a famous prophetess lived 500 years ago in the reigns of King Henry VIII and Queen Elizabeth I.
- She foretold the fates of several rulers within and just after her lifetime, as well as the invention of iron ships, the Great Fire of London in 1666, and the defeat of the Spanish Armada.
- Born in the cave besides Knaresborough's famous dropping or petrifying well, an extremely slow running waterfall that turns items to stone by depositing limestone on the item, works similar to how stalactites and stalagmites are formed but much faster
- England’s Oldest Paid Visitor Attraction, open since 1630.
- The cave itself is very small, just large enough for Mother Shipton to live in. The owners have made it & the area intersting & stimulating for children.
- What makes this attraction so popular?
- Easy access from the large Yorkshire cities
- Easy & extremely picturesque river side walk
- The attraction may not be suitable for people with impaired mobility. Unfortunately, there is no wheelchair access to the Cave, Well and Museum. Due to the protected tree preservation orders of the site, this restricts any gradients to be installed for wheelchair access.
- There is access from the main entrance to: to Riverside Walk & Woodland Walk.

- The main entrance (to car park) is on the Harrogate to Knaresborough road just before the bridge over the River Nidd. A very pleasant riverside walk takes you from the car park to the cave.
- The nearest bus stop is on High Bridge. The bus stop is 98ft / 0.02 miles / 0.03 km from Mother Shipton’s Main Entrance

- Located on the south side of Ingleborough.
- North of the picturesque village of Clapham in the Yorkshire Dales, we are easily accessible by road and rail.
- Access to the Cave is via the Ingleborough Estate Nature Trail and a small charge is applicable.
- The Trail is a popular 2 km walk suitable for all ages. You should allow a minimum of half an hour for the walk
- By Bus:
Service 581: Settle - Austwick - Clapham - Ingleton - Kirkby Lonsdale. The Craven Connection bus service. This regular service stops at the New Inn in the centre of Clapham village.
From there simply follow the signs for Ingleborough Cave and Ingleborough Mountain - By Train:

White Scar Cave

- The Cave the longest Show Cave in Britain and sculptured by nature over 1000s of years.
- Formed by an underground river. Note the water sculptured walls.
- The cave was found by a man belly crawling through a very low fissure in the rock.
- The present entrance and some sections are man made, ie. mined, for tourist access.
- A subterranean landscape under Ingleborough mountain, beautifully lit with gushing streams and waterfalls, exotic cave formations and 1000s of stalactites.
- Because of the low temperature 80 Centigrade a pullover or Jacket is required, even in summer.
- The tour covers 1 mile and takes eighty minutes.
- Open all year except Christmas.

- Flooring: Much of the flooring is metal grid. Unsuitable to Walking sticks & similar aids, & No high heels.
- No pushchair, buggy, wheelchair and guide dog access allowed in the cave.
- The tour route has 97 steps. that's roughly equivalent to a 7 storey building.
- There are 2 low height locations where you must bend over at the waist to pass.
- The tour is not considered suitable for people with cardiac conditions.
- Hard hats are provided & must be worn.
- It is recommended that kids wear a woolly hat without a bobble or similar under the hard hat for a snugger fit.

Ripley Castle
Ripley Castle was and is the home of the Ingilby family for the last seven hundred years. Henry Ingilby collected taxes for Edward III and helped the king to finance the construction of Windsor Castle. His brother Thomas saved the king’s life and was knighted for his courage. Looks like a fortified stately home than a castle. Besides visiting the castle see the walled gardens and the stocks in the village of Ripley.

Scarborough Castle
Scarborough castle has had a very long history around 2500 years as a defensive position going back to Viking raid era. The castle withstood 2 sieges in the Civil war. It has also served as a prison and later as barracks until it was shelled by a German warship in 1914.

Guided Walking Programs
- Because of this Guided Walking Programs are organised from railway stations on this route on some Weds, Sats and Suns. Leaflets are available at stations and tourist offices.
- Some of the walks are further a field from the stations and involves the use of a bus. The walks are free but train and bus fares have to be paid. The walk leaders will meet you o the destination station platform. Some walks return from a different station.
- A similar scheme of Guided Walks takes place from stations on the Leeds Settle Lancaster Morecambe line.
- See the leaflet with regards to footwear, clothing including waterproof clothing. There is a grading for difficulty from Moderate to Extra Strenuous.

- The Ingleton Waterfalls Trail follows a circular route with several waterfalls on two rivers and a walk across open country between the rivers.
- The walk is a moderately challenging route taking about 2 -4 hours for 7km, with a height difference of 200m. There are a large number of steps.
- The footpath is well defined but uneven & can be slippy. Visitors must stay on the path.
- There is a charge. Pay by card on the day. Booking not required.
- The walk is over private land and the footpath requires maintanence.
