Bollywood Oscars comes to Yorkshire
It was announced by Amitabh Bachchan, "Mr B" Bollywood's biggest star, on 16 June 2006 that the Yorkshire region will be selected to host the
IIFA (International Indian Film Academy awards), and Sheffield has been earmarked to host the award ceremony. Besides Sheffield
the cities of Leeds, Bradford and Hull are expected to hold events for the 4 day duration of this spectacular.

- The IIFA (International Indian Film Academy awards) is also known as the Bollywood 'Oscars'.
- This will be a 4 day event in June 2007
- It is hoped that some special cricket match will take place at Headingley cricket ground Leeds.
- It is hoped to hold the award ceremony at the Sheffield Arena
- Bollywood, the Indian Hollywood located in Mumbai, formerly Bombay, hence the name Bollywood, are the largest film producers in the world make over 1000
films a year, each costing multi millions
- Zulfi Karim is director of the bid and attended the 2005 awards in Amsterdam. Zulfi stated that
- "We're hoping to stage the award ceremony at the Sheffield Arena,"
- "The IIFA [International Indian Film Academy] Awards and the event itself is very much a global event. The event is a fantastic opportunity to
get Yorkshire involved as a major destination for events,"
- "The UK is one of the largest box office revenue generators for Bollywood films outside of India, so we're hoping to attract people, not just
from the region, but nationally and overseas as well.
